A federal judge in San Francisco has overturned Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriages, and has ruled that gays and lesbians have a constituional right to marry. He stated that Prop 8...
"fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.”This makes me happy. Australia, take note!
And yes, I was going to put a pic of my two fav boys up here for aesthetic appeal, but then I saw this pic while net-trolling and thought it was perfect, because seriously, who could hate on them?

Love is love.
ReplyDeleteNo truer words have been spoken.
It comes in more shapes and sizes than we can even fathom. So why be prejudice against something that is so beautiful?
What she said. And I think that's it's great that FINALLY someone in American politics told the TRUTH, stating that it's not right to interfere with the rights of individuals to marry. Rock on, all!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing how you see so many older generations coming out and without a care.
ReplyDeleteIt warms my heart to see and yes "AUSTRALIA TAKE NOTE" i have many friends here that would love the same result. <3

ReplyDeleteI wanted to be really excited with everyone else, but the newscasters sorta killed my buzz by quickly pointing out that the eminent Judge Vaughn's decision is in no way final and that he has already agreed to hear the appeals. It is likely that the case will go to The Supreme Court, and I'm honestly scared of what they're going to do :-(
It is a HUGE step, but Vaughn's credibility is already being questioned due to his orientation and the Church has a very strong presence here as of late (don't ask me how THAT fucking happened.)
Prop 8 should never have passed in the first place. It needs to stay gone, and then maybe my home state (and the states surrounding it) will finally legalize. Living in hope - some weddings I'd like to attend without schlepping!
Yeah, I saw that it has been appealed already, but I guess that was only to be expected. I really hope that the decision to overturn it gets upheld though. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd re orientation...is Vaughn gay? Trust everyone to focus on that and ignore the fact he is a legal judge. Sucks.
I had no idea that Oz did not allow gay marriage! For some reason I just pictured a care-free, happy little country.. I mean you produced Keith Urban. The epitome of sweetness and love.
ReplyDeleteI really hope they get their shit together. But, you know, if you happen to fall for a lady, become a Canadian Citizen! :D We love our gays! Haha.
All Australian states recognise gay de facto couples, which means they have the same rights as heterosexual de facto couples under law.
ReplyDeleteHowever, in 2004, our federal government expressly changed the wording in our marriage act to define it between a man and a women (in order to put it beyond legal challenge). Meaning that same-sex marriages are illegal. For all the awesomeness that is Australia, this seems archaic and annoys me to no end. Hopefully it will get changed one day.
And thanks for the invite, but I think we are safe there. It's not something I will ever have to deal with myself, but I just think it is so wrong for the law to define who you can love, or how valid that love it. But anyways, go Canada!!!
